Michael Carrick is convinced Sunderland will enjoy an upturn of fortunes before too long - he has stressed that we have to make sure it isn't at the Lane on Saturday.

Mick McCarthy's men have recorded just one win in 15 games so far and sit rock bottom of the Premiership.

Midfielder Michael experienced a similar start to a Premiership campaign with West Ham in 2002-03 - a start that ultimately cost the Hammers their place in the top flight.

they managed to turn things around in the second half of that season and Michael believes the Black Cats can do the same

"They've had a terrible start but they will click sooner or later - there will be a time when they pick up results," said Michael. "Our job is to make sure that doesn't happen on Saturday.

"We're not going into the game thinking 'they're bottom, they haven't started well so it will be easy' because that is when you cause yourself problems.

"You have to approach it the same as if you are playing the champions and be at your best and then that should be good enough but we're under no illusions, it will be tough."
