Carr backs 'Doc'

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Carr is backing Gary Doherty to have a prosperous international career with Ireland — even though our young star has been left out of Mick McCarthy’s starting line-up for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier in Cyprus.
The defender, still just 20, teamed up with the full squad this week for Group Two qualifying matches against Cyprus and Andorra.
Gary has taken giant strides after a slow start to this season and exploded onto the scene with his first goal for us after being switched back to a central defensive role against Newcastle United on January 2. He has excelled in defence since and pushed forward to great effect when needed.
Stephen, desperately disappointed to be missing out himself because of injury, has seen Gary’s rapid rise first hand and says he can now handle the pressure of qualifying matches for the most important tournament in football.
Our current Player of the Year said: “Gary’s done unbelievably well. He’s scored a few goals and done well up front and at the back. He’s buzzing now, his confidence is flying and it would be great for him to play in a World Cup qualifier. It would make his season.
“The only thing I suppose counting against him is the experience of the likes of Breen and Kenny Cunningham, who has just come back from injury and had been very steady for us.
“Gary is playing well and there is no reason why he shouldn’t be confident. His time will come.”
Stephen insists Gary is at the right club to further his international prospects.
He added: “As much as we haven’t been up in the top six this is still a massive club, I think we’re going in the right direction and if Gary does it here, at this level, playing for Tottenham he will get looked at.
“He just has to keep his feet on the ground. You can lose it all so easily if you think you are the best thing since sliced bread. You’ve seen it all before. That’s when you get found out.
“He’s hard working and level headed and it shouldn’t happen to him. All the youngsters have been great.”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
