The young goalkeeper suffered a broken leg just seven minutes from the end of the Barclays Premier Reserve League Play-Off Final against Manchester United.
Incredibly already out of plaster, ‘Burchy’ has started his rehabilitation at Spurs Lodge and his hoping to return by the end of the year.
He turned his mind back to that night at Old Trafford. “I knew I’d done something that I wouldn’t be able to get up from but at the same time, I thought straight away about next season.
“It was always going to be a big season and I was looking to get out on loan and play, my thoughts went straight to that and what I was going to do because I thought I’d have the cast on for three months, not be able to move and be out for a long time.
“So although it was painful, my mind was straight on what I was going to do next season. It was strange.
“The medical team have said three to six months - three months takes us to August and six months is November.
“By the time the reserves start again I shouldn’t have missed too much football, so that’s good news. I’m also out of the cast already and hopefully within a couple of weeks I’ll be able to put weight on it and get walking.
“I might be able to join in pre-season but at the moment I’m waiting for the results of a few more X-rays and scans.â€Â
Naturally, the injury came as a huge blow to the keeper who spent the first half of the 2003-04 season as a deputy to Kasey Keller in the Premiership.
He appeared to have overcome the injuries that had dogged him in the last couple of seasons and was a member of the reserve squad that won the league’s Southern section title.
“It’s a shame really,†added the 22-year-old who has enjoyed loan spells at Woking, Stevenage Borough and West Ham. “I feel in my own mind that I had a good season, I played a number of games for the reserves, we won the league and that has been good for us because it gave us something to fight for throughout the season.
“I felt I was quite solid all season, training went well and even looking back now pre-season went well and I felt fit.
“I had a few problems the season before and it was always a big thing for me to get through without many injuries but inside the last 10 minutes of the final game of the season I’ve picked up one of the worst injuries you can get.
“The way I see is that it’s one of those things. My ankle held up well this season, I felt sharp and that was important for me. This injury is bad but it’s one of those things and as a keeper, you will get these knocks. It’s part of the game.â€Â
Robert Burch has revealed how his thoughts turned immediately to next season as he lay stricken at Old Trafford last month.
