Brian Statham will take centre-stage when our reserves travel to Chesham United on Saturday (3pm) for their second pre-season friendly.
Statham made 27 appearances at the Lane in season 1987-88 and is now skipper at the non-league outfit. His former team-mate and current reserve team boss Chris Hughton was only too happy to turn out at The Meadow.
Hughton said: "The thought of playing a game at Chesham was a good one for us anyway but the angle was Brian Statham. He played quite a few matches in our first team and was very much a favourite here. The club decided to give him a benefit game, he rang me some time ago and I was delighted to tale a side down there."
The reserves kicked-off pre-season preparations with a 0-0 draw at Aylesbury United on Wednesday. Hughton added: "It is good match practice for us, hopefully we'll get through with no injuries but of course the fact that is will help an ex-player here was too good to miss.
"Every week you'll look at games throughout the country and it's always nice to see players who were here playing at other clubs.
"These were lads who perhaps played in my reserve team, had left the club and are now playing in lower leagues. It's good to remember the players who were here. A lot of them come back, a lot of them ring, a lot come to the games and it's nice to have that continuity."
