The veteran stopper, who joined us from Villa in 2011, was impressed by his old club’s performance in their 1-0 win at Norwich City on Saturday, and reserved praise for goalkeeping counterpart Brad Guzan, who saved a first half penalty from Robert Snodgrass and later kept the Canaries at bay with some fine work between the sticks.
And ahead of our trip to Villa Park in the Third Round of the Capital One Cup, our experienced stopper reckons the hosts will be keen to carry over their momentum from the weekend’s performance.
“They’ve had a tough start to the season but they’ve performed well in all the games I’ve seen, with the exception of Newcastle at home,” said Brad.
“They did well at Norwich, so they will be coming into the game on that high. Brad Guzan has been playing really well.”
Friedel, who won the competition with Blackburn Rovers in 2002 – having toppled us in the Final – says a difficult game is in store, but is adamant the lads will be doing all they can to secure progression into the next round.
“I would think Villa will put a strong team out,” he said. “We expect a really tough game. We’ll go there to win, so it should be a good tie.”
