Booth targeted for loan deal

Posted on 29 January 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Andy Booth is set to join us on a month’s loan from Sheffield Wednesday.
Our director of football revealed the proposed deal on Monday afternoon and hoped the 27-year-old would be on board on Tuesday morning.
Booth, who scored for Wednesday at Southampton in the FA Cup on Saturday, may sign in time to play at West Ham on Wednesday.
We’ve targeted a loan signing with Les Ferdinand, Steffen Iversen and Chris Armstrong all injured.
David said: “It’s somewhat unusual for us to make a loan signing but we felt we wanted to give Les Ferdinand the maximum chance to rehabilitate from his hamstring injury.
“We don’t want to force him back too early because we’ve got a heavy schedule coming up.
“We’ve also Steffen Iversen and Chris Armstrong out and we felt we needed a little more strength to go with Sergei Rebrov, to give him a fair opportunity.
“We can only loan from the Nationwide League or Scotland and usually it’s a player who is either surplus to requirements, or financial considerations or contract situations.
“After one or two enquiries we decided to go for Andy Booth. He came through Sheffield Wednesday’s game at Southampton okay on Saturday, he’s played in the top division at Sheffield Wednesday and it’s an opportunity for him.
“I hope everything goes through cleanly and that enjoys his month here.
“He’s strong in the air, very wholehearted and very genuine, one of the best professionals I’ve ever worked with.
“He’s been stuck in the Sheffield Wednesday syndrome for the last three or four years, things haven’t gone well and I think he has a contract situation as well.
“It’s an opportunity for him to show himself and who knows, if he does exceptionally well, he may prove a real point.
“We’re hoping it will go through and if it does it will give us a bit more power, no question about that.
“If everything goes according to plan we’re hoping he’ll be available for Wednesday’s game at West Ham.
“Of course, we could have moved Gary Doherty forward and I’m sure he would have done a good job, especially in home games when we have a bit more possession, but he’s done well at the back in the last few games.”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
