The boss has been on the trail of a new striker since the departures of Les Ferdinand and Sergei Rebrov and, more recently, Teddy Sheringham. He does not view the recruitment as the final piece in the jigsaw, more a notable starting point for the new season.
"It is a very positive step in the right direction and, as I said, we're going to make sure we strengthen the squad from here on in," said Glenn.
"It is a fantastic first signing for the club this summer and we've got to make sure that we back it up.
"So yes, it is a massive step towards achieving the way we want to play this coming season.
"We've had to strengthen in this area and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that we could bring in another striker.
"We've got some good youngsters coming in in that area as well. You always want competition for places and we are looking in that area as well as others."
Glenn added that he has discussed the aims and objectives of the club with his latest signing, who he feels can play a big part in realising them.
"Helder has just come from what was a massive challenge at Porto and this is a fresh challenge for him.
"We've spoken about the ideals and the direction in which the club needs to go. He needs to settle into English football first and foremost and he knows what our aims are - to put this club back to where we were years ago.
"I think this young man can be a massive step towards that."
Glenn Hoddle says that the signing of Helder Postiga is a significant step in the right direction.
