Martin Jol described the first half against Arsenal as our best 45 minutes of football since he became Head Coach.

Ledley King put us 1-0 up as we dominated that first 45 minutes of the derby at the Lane on Saturday.

Michael Carrick, who bossed it from central midfield, also whistled a shot just wide while Jermaine Jenas saw his rocket tipped over by Jens Lehmann before narrowly failing to flick home Jermain Defoe's cross in added time.

The first half was the best football we've played against a top side

Lehmann made another big save from Defoe after 59 minutes but Arsenal came more and more into the game with the introduction of substitutes Robert Pires, the key change at half-time and Robin Van Persie. They eventually equalised via Pires with 13 minutes left.

"We played some excellent games last season - Everton, Aston Villa when we scored five goals - but against a top side, that first half was almost perfect.

"Michael Carrick was unbelievably confident in his passing, one-touch, not dwelling on the ball. For me, as I've always said, he's one of the best."
