Ben rues Turf Moor draw

Ben Davies wasn’t interested in any personal plaudits after his assist in Monday’s FA Cup clash with Burnley – insisting we “have to be better” when we meet the Clarets again in next week’s replay.

It was Ben who supplied the ball in from which Nacer Chadli opened the scoring 11 minutes into the second half as we took the lead in our Third Round tie at Turf Moor.

But a goal from the left-back’s Welsh international team-mate Sam Vokes 17 minutes from time ensured it ended 1-1 on the night and means we’ll try again at White Hart Lane to establish which side goes through to host Leicester in the Fourth Round.

“We were disappointed not to close the game out having gone ahead,” admitted Ben.

“For our goal, I saw Nacer free in the box and managed to pick him out. It was a great touch and finish by him but the individual stuff doesn’t matter when the result isn’t the one we were looking for.

“We got caught up a little bit in the game Burnley were trying to play. We just needed to try to get in behind them a little bit more.

“It helped us when we had two strikers up front in Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane. That gave us the opportunity to create more space and get on the ball a bit more, but it’s a draw at the end of the day and we have to be better in the replay.”

Reflecting on the goalscoring performance of his international colleague Vokes, Ben added: “He’s a great finisher. He gives defenders that he comes up against a tough time and we’ll look to do a job on him in the replay.”

With that extra clash to come next week – a third meeting with Sean Dyche’s men in less than a month following our 2-1 Premier League win at the Lane on December 20 – the left-back says the players are determined in their pursuit of silverware.

“We have to do the job now at White Hart Lane,” he added. “It’s definitely our aim to kick on and win as many games as we can in every competition – this one is no different. We’re going to go ahead, try to pick up as many wins as we can and go as far as possible.”
