Our reserves top scorer with 17 goals in 17 games last term hit a dipping shot into the top corner from 20 yards to secure a 2-0 victory against the Mauritius national team at the Anjalay Stadium on Friday. Robbie Keane netted the first goal.
It meant Lee scored the first and last goals of the 2004-05 season — the first in a friendly against Falkenbergs in Sweden in July and, 10 months on, the last here in Mauritius.
Even ‘Barney’ admitted he might not have tried something like it a year ago. “You’re right,” he smiled. “I’m a lot more confident now, looking for goals and it’s all about confidence.
“I feel a lot stronger mentally and physically and a lot more confident within myself.
“The ball came into me on the left, I played a one-two, cut inside and thought to myself ‘I can hit this’ put my head down and it flew into the top corner.
“It was the perfect way to finish the season.”
Lee Barnard feels his wonderful strike against Mauritius underlines his progression in the last year.
