After a double against Newcastle last weekend, Bale scored two fantastic 25-yard free-kicks in our Europa League tie on Thursday - either side of an incredible strike by Lyon's Umtiti - and says it was vital we secured a first leg lead to take to France next week.
"It was great to get the lead but it was a wonder strike from Umtiti, out of this world. We didn’t play at our best but the important thing was that when we weren’t at our best, we still got the victory. That was vitally important not just for the tie but for the confidence of the team," Bale told Spurs TV after the match, before talking about his opening goal.
"It was a nice angle and I was able to get the ball up and down and move it around. It was great to see it go in. I’ve been practicing a lot and they are starting to go in a bit now, which is pleasing after all that hard work. To see that work materialise on the pitch is great.
"It was a difficult game, they made it difficult for us in the second half, stayed quite deep, but thankfully we got a free-kick at the end and I managed to stick it away.
"They are a good team, well organised and we have to see what happens in the second leg. They will have to come at us because they are losing and hopefully that will leave a few gaps."
