Harry Redknapp said he couldn't fault the team after pushing Shakhtar Donetsk all the way but ultimately failing to turn around a 2-0 deficit in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night.
We created a host of chances and had three penalty appeals waved away in the last 32, second leg encounter but had to settle for a 1-1 scoreline on the night and therefore a 3-1 defeat on aggregate to the Ukraine side.
Giovani gave us hope with a cracker into the top corner after 55 minutes but we couldn't find that second goal and the visitors hit us with a tie-ending equaliser from Fernandinho five mintes from time.
Academy striker Jon Obika impressed on his full debut and whistled two shots just wide in the first half while Gareth Bale and Pascal Chimbonda also went close.
Fraizer Campbell was involved in all three penalty incidents and at least two looked nailed on decisions but were waved away, the third and final of these appeals for what appeared to be a blatant foul in the crucial period just after Gio's goal.
"I've seen a replay and that was a blatant penalty," agreed Harry afterwards. "Fraizer was pushed by one player and chopped down by another who came across him. That would have brought us back to 2-2 on aggregate.
"There were a lot of positives and I thought we were terrific.
"We had good chances in the first half, came in 0-0 but then got the goal. You couldn't fault the effort, they really gave the crowd something to get behind.
"They all worked hard, gave everything and I was delighted with them.
"I thought we were very, very unlucky not to win the game by the goals we needed to. It would have been great to go through and I think we deserved to."
