Kevin Bond was left scratching his head after our hopes of a third-successive trip to Wembley in the Carling Cup ended in the quarter-finals at Manchester United on Tuesday.
The mystery was how we failed to get going in what was such a big game just two steps from the final.
After a bright start at Old Trafford, two fine strikes from Darron Gibson put United in the driving seat 2-0 up at half-time.
The second half was a huge anti-climax and despite plenty of effort, there was no real snap from either side. David Bentley forced a decent save from Tomasz Kuszczak on the hour but that was about that.
"It was a quarter-final of a major cup competition and we just never got going," reflected assistant boss Kevin at Old Trafford.
"I felt, in all fairness, that the longer the game went on, probably the worse we got and that needs to be addressed.
"We started well but conceded bad goals and from the second goal, we didn't really give United any problems and that's the most disappointing thing about it.
"I'm not sure what the problem was. A lack of confidence? I'm not sure. We seemed to lack the belief that we could get back into the game after going 2-0 behind.
"With how we started the game we thought we could cause them problems and we all felt this was a chance to progress, but is wasn't to be.
"I'm sure it will be a one-off. Up until this point the lads have been fantastic this season but this was a big disappointment. Hopefully it's something that won't be repeated."
