Tottenham-based Awesome Lane Hotspur was set up for children with Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism that often affects social interaction and communication, which can make taking take part in team games difficult.
But thanks to coaching from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, the Active London Project, Haringey Mencap and Haringey Autism (a branch of the National Autistic Society) , many participants have been able to raise their PE levels at school, and even take part in mainstream school football.
Awesome Lane Hotspur is the only team of its kind to be linked with a Premier League football club, and the youngsters reaped the benefits of this when Pascal turned up to a training session at White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre.
The French full-back took part in a ball-skills session, a penalty shoot-out competition, and also took time to field questions and sign autographs for the children and their siblings who were also there.
He said: “I know Spurs are involved in many projects like this in the community, and I understand this is a very special team.
“Perhaps many children who face the issues these children have would find themselves left out when it comes to playing sport, so I’m pleased the Club are doing something to help change this.
“Overall, it’s great to get out into the community and see football being enjoyed the way it should be, and us players are always happy to get involved.”
Chimbonda’s appearance was part of Tottenham Hotspur’s commitment to Premier League community initiative Creating Chances, through which Awesome Lane Hotspur will receive a £2,000 donation.
