Gary Mabbutt has seen first-hand the work of SOS Children's Villages and is right behind the charity's appeal to ‘do something amazing' in World Orphan Week.
Legendary defender and skipper for 11 of his 16 years at the club, Gary was on hand at the official opening of the ‘Tottenham Hotspur House' at the SOS Village in Rustenburg, South Africa.
SOS has been our official global charity partner since 2007 and we uniquely helped fund and construct the ‘Spurs House' by monies received from players' fines.
"I've been lucky enough to go and see the Spurs House in Rustenburg," said Gary from pitchside at White Hart Lane on Saturday. "It was an incredible experience, very humbling and the work they do at SOS is amazing.
"I would ask all Spurs fans to ‘do something amazing' and sponsor an orphan in World Orphan Week.
"SOS Children is the world's largest orphan charity and the main aim of World Orphan Week is to raise the profile of the charity and generate sponsorship all around the world.
"Our particular aim is to try and get an extra 1,000 sponsors of orphans. The players and management team have all got involved and we'd love supporters to do the same."
The Club's entire first team and management have backed the campaign and each has signed up to sponsor an orphan in one of three countries - Haiti, South Africa and China.
Haiti, South Africa and China are three areas with specific relevance to Spurs.
The Club has had a long-term relationship with SOS Children in South Africa having built an orphan house in Rustenburg. During the Club's pre season tour to China, ahead of the 2009/10 season, members of the first team visited orphans at a newly opened Village in Beijing. And with so many of SOS Children's resources being channelled to Haiti following the recent earthquake, there's an increasing and pressing need to support the charity's efforts in the country.
There are 145 million orphaned children in the world. 100 million more have been abandoned to live on the streets. SOS Children is the world's largest orphan charity and provides a family for life for children who have lost their parents through war, famine, disease, natural disaster and poverty.
Over 78,000 orphaned and abandoned children are cared for by SOS mothers in clusters of family homes in more than 500 Children's Villages in 124 countries worldwide.
