The first time this occurred was back in May 1951 at The Lane, a week after we had claimed the Football League Championship with victory over Sheffield Wednesday. A 3-1 victory over Liverpool with goals from Sonny Walters and two from Peter Murphy rounded off our campaign.
In 1967 we held a Bill Shankley side to a 0-0 draw at Anfield and then went on to lift the FA Cup at Wembley with victory over Chelsea a week later.
In 1982, we met one of the great Liverpool sides twice in the month of May. We earned a 2-2 draw at The Lane before Bob Paisley’s side secured the league title with a 3-1 win at Anfield 12 days later. A fortnight after that, we beat QPR to lift the FA Cup.
We achieved the same feat with victory over Nottingham Forest a week after another Anfield defeat in May 1991, and six weeks after lifting the 1999 League Cup, we were defeated 3-2 in Liverpool despite going 2-0 up.
Let’s hope Sunday’s Barclays Premier League meeting with Rafa Benitez’s side rounds off the season in which we lifted our first trophy since that year in style.
