Anthony Gardner says the addition of Calum Davenport to the squad only adds to the intense competition for places in the central defensive ranks.
Calum was recalled from a loan stint at West Ham following his recruitment from Coventry City at the end of August. The England under-21 international made his debut - in attack - at Aston Villa following his recall and is now jostling with Anthony for a place in the 16 on matchdays.
Anthony feels this strength of competition can only be good for the club, but admits they all want to play.
"Calum has come in and there are a few centre-halves fighting for positions - like in midfield. Everyone can't play every game and it is all about competition at the end of the day.
"Everyone wants to go in the same direction but, at the same time, everyone wants to play. All you can do is work hard and the manager will pick the team.
"Calum is a good player and I have played against him before. he is tall, good in the air and on the floor. He is young and will only get better."
