Andre Villas-Boas sees FC Basel as a difficult opponent proven at the highest level of European football.

We face the Swiss champions and current league leaders in the first leg of our Europa League quarter-final at White Hart Lane tonight. We kick-off at 8.05pm.

FC Basel famously knocked out Manchester United in the group stages of the Champions League last season.

Benfica were also in that group and Basel went on to face Bayern Munich in the Round of 16, beating the Bundesliga giants at St Jakob Park before suffering a 7-0 hammering in the return against the eventual finalists.

Having initially started back in the Champions League qualifiers in July, Basel lost a play-off against Cluj to step into the Europa League this season. They reached the knockout phase as runners-up and have now beaten Dnipro and Zenit to reach the quarter-finals.

“At this time of the competition the most important thing for us all to understand is that every single team dreams of winning the trophy,” said Andre.

“We’re a small step away from the final and everyone wants to lift that trophy.

“Basel is a team that has played a lot of European football lately and has done well, particularly in the season they knocked out Manchester United and played Bayern.

“The team has changed and the manager has changed but this is a team that is used to winning trophies and used to playing European football, so they are in the same line as teams we’ve faced before, Lyon and Inter Milan, perhaps not with the same European pedigree and trophy cabinet, but a team that is used to winning and that makes them a difficult opponent.”
