A final shot count of 23-6 in our favour underlined where the action was as we were denied time and again by United goalkeeper David De Gea before Clint struck.
The result stretched our sequence to one loss in 11 in the Premier League but it was the nature of the performance against the league leaders – nine wins in 10 coming into the game, 18 in 23 for the season – that particularly impressed.
Asked how he felt when Clint scored, Andre said: “It’s a boost of confidence, almost like a relief for what we were doing.
“Had we lost this game, it would have been tremendously unfair because people wouldn’t probably have recognised how well we played. In the end, the players got the credit they deserved. It was an impressive performance.”
In many ways, Clint’s display mirrored the that of the team – denied at point-blank by De Gea and with a couple of half-chances also coming his way, he kept going until finally the chance came to slot home the equaliser.
“They all deserve credit,” added Andre. “Clint is the goalscorer, he sniffs out these opportunities. He scored twice in the FA Cup against Coventry and he’s always there, right in the face of the goalkeeper. That’s exactly the reason we bought him.”
Clint Dempsey struck in the final seconds to secure a deserved point after we’d dominated for long periods against the Premier League leaders at the Lane.
