America Trophy continues to grow

Posted on 8 December 2016  - 08:56

The past weekend saw the annual Tottenham Hotspur America Trophy host its biggest number of teams to date as young players from across North America competed in front of our Global Coaching team.

Now in its fifth year, the competition, run in partnership with Elite Tournaments, took place across three venues in Maryland and included a total of 93 teams – equating to over 1,600 players aged 11 – 15.

As part of the Club’s continued efforts to help support the development of the game at grassroots level across the world, the America Trophy is proving ever popular in a nation where the appeal of football continues to grow.

At present, we have 52 Official Supporters’ Clubs in North America – more than any other Premier League team – and for the tournament participants there was an opportunity of a lifetime at stake.

Our Global Coaching team cast their eye over the matches and will be selecting the top 30 players from the tournament to travel to London in April to spend a week playing competitive fixtures and training at the club with Spurs coaches.

Grant Cornwell MBE, our Head of Global Coaching, said: “It is fantastic to see the America Trophy continue to grow with the standard of players continuing to improve year on year.

“Our coaching team travelled to the US to help identify the best young players from the tournament using the same the talent identification programme that is used within our Academy back in London.

“Whilst in London, the players will have a once in a lifetime experience and will get to play a number of competitive fixtures against Spurs youth teams and other professional clubs, as well as training with Spurs coaches at Hotspur Way.

“We are excited about the prospect of bringing this extremely talented group of players over to London in April and believe that they will benefit hugely from the experience as they continue with their football development.”
