A workaholic midfielder who could also play wide, Ralph was signed by Bill in 1971 for a sizeable £190,000 fee from Burnley.
Ralph will always be remembered for coming off the bench to thump home the winner against Norwich City in the 1973 League Cup Final under the Twin Towers at Wembley Stadium.
He was also in the UEFA Cup winning team of 1972 and went on to make over 200 appearances for us.
"The man himself was terrific," recalled Ralph of Bill. "He was a great ambassador for the sport, a great manager and a perfect gentleman.
"He brought me down from Burnley and that was wonderful for me.
"I owe him a lot and he will always be in my thoughts. He was a real gentleman and we'll all miss him greatly."
Wembley hero Ralph Coates will never forget the influence Bill Nicholson had on his career.
