The 20-year-old who made such a storming start to his career at the highest level in our televised win against Liverpool is now bidding to become a regular in the side.
He has made three successive starts including Old Trafford on Saturday and has left Ramon Vega waiting on the sidelines. You are tempted to say that once you’ve walked out at Old Trafford you’ve made it but Thelwell isn’t like that at all.
Level headed as ever, Thelwell said: “I’ve been fortunate to play in the last three games and I’m just going to enjoy it and whenever I’m picked, just try to do my best.
“Playing at Old Trafford was a dream come true really, against one of the greatest teams in the world and a great experience.”
So what did he remember about his biggest day yet? He recalled: “I was in the tunnel, with 67,000 fans outside, looking at Beckham, Scholes and just thinking they are a great team.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t win but I suppose in the first half they were on fire, the movement was good and it was hard for us but in the second half we put them under pressure and we were a little unlucky not to get an equaliser. Then they got the second goal.
“But they’ve got quality all over the pitch, especially at Old Trafford when they have the crowd behind them and they are all so confident. You have to concentrate for the whole game. They have runners from midfield and everyone is prepared to work hard as well.
“They set the standards. They are top of the league and you can see why.”
