Ledley King impressed his team mates, manager and pundits alike after stepping into midfield for England's win against Poland.

Our skipper and centre-back took the holding role behind Frank Lampard in the 2-1 victory as Sven Goran Eriksson's men topped the group.

His assured performance grabbed the headlines in the Mail, Times and Independent and furthered his claims for a spot in the World Cup squad.

He came on and did very well on Saturday and played excellently. You can see he is a very useful player for us

Boss Eriksson added: "You can see he is a very useful player for us. He's strong, good on the ball and he gives us options. I'm happy for him."ÂÂ

Goalscorer Lampard added: “He's great on the ball and was a pleasure to play with. He showed all of England that he is capable of playing in that role."ÂÂ

Alan Hansen was also full of praise in his role as pundit on BBC's Match of the Day. “He played better than I expected," he said. “He showed positional play, discipline and he can pass the ball. He's good in possession, good in the tackle and keeps it nice and simple."
