In the latest round of matches, Portsmouth beat Liverpool, Bolton grabbed a point at Chelsea and Reading beat Newcastle – only Everton lost out, having led 2-0 against Manchester United.
That’s why Martin Jol described our victory at Middlesbrough as a ‘must-win’ and Chris feels the same applies for the rest of the campaign.
The first of the final three games is at Charlton on Monday (8pm) followed home games against Blackburn on Thursday (May 10, 8pm) and Manchester City on Sunday (May 13, 3pm).
“All we can do is look after our own results and if we do that, the others won’t matter, but those teams will all be pushing and trying to get one of those European spots,” reasoned Chris.
“I certainly don’t expect any of them to go away so it will very much be about what we do, rather than relying on other results.
“They’ve all had consistent seasons and that’s why they are where they are in the table.
“Fratton Park is tough place to go, so I half-expected Portsmouth to get a result against Liverpool but I thought Newcastle would be a tough one for Reading at this stage, but they just keep going and they’ve had a wonderful season. They all deserve to be where they are.”

Chris Hughton is targeting three wins out of three in the final week of the season - because he doesn’t expect the challenge of our UEFA Cup-chasing rivals to fade.
