Alex Inglethorpe admits the Under-18s did not perform to their potential in their 2-1 FA Youth Cup fourth round win over Chester City but is delighted to be through nonetheless. We left it late to knock-out our plucky opposition at White Hart Lane, and a disputed David Hutton spot-kick on 87 minutes was all that separated the sides.

After what has been an impressive season so far, coach Alex was hoping his side would show what they were made of in front of a good crowd at the Lane.

And although he concedes we didn’t do that, Alex believes his players would have learnt from the experience.

He said: “I don’t think we’ll try and kid anyone by saying that was our best performance. We’ve had a lot of outstanding performances this year and that wouldn’t rank amongst them.

“It wasn’t the performance we wanted but, like in any cup competition, sometimes it’s just about getting through.

“These are young lads, and although they’re used to coming to the Lane and watching Berbatov and Keane play, they’re not used to being centre-stage themselves. But I think they’ve overcome a mental hurdle and I think a few of them would’ve learnt from the experience

“It was a fantastic experience but we’re just so disappointed that we know what we’re capable of but didn’t quite show that. I feel the players will benefit from this though, the draw for the next round is on Friday and it will be good to see where we go next.”
