Academy to benefit from Eurofoot experience

Alex Inglethorpe feels our Academy squad will reap the benefits of their experience in this year's Eurofoot Tournament in Belgium.

Academy to benefit from Eurofoot experience

The squad finished 11th in the tournament after beating Anderlecht in a penalty shoot-out on Sunday.

Having lost their opening match of four to eventual winners Atletico Paranaense of Brazil on Friday, the lads bounced back with a 2-1 win against SV Zulte Waregem of Belgium, with Shaquille Coulthirst and Darren McQueen on target.

However, they lost Saturday's three group fixtures to Utrecht, Club Bruges and Standard Liege before Sunday's victory over Anderlecht.

"In the last five years we've gone to the Eurofoot and reached the final four times so the expectation was high and preparation had gone well," said Alex.

"Fortune may have played a part in some of the games but in some, we were found wanting and I think some individuals will have to be helped in terms of playing under pressure.

"Like I said, it doesn't always go the way you expect it to, but that's not to say we didn't have some outstanding performances.

"Josh Onomah was the youngest player in the tournament but for me, the best. Filip Lesniak would be in the same category. So two young players have both excelled. I was delighted with the pair of them and it will be a fantastic experience for the group as a whole."
