The scent of victory turned into the taste of defeat as our Under-18s lost out late to Reading in the FA Premier Academy League.

The lads were chasing the win against the team currently second in Group B of the FAPAL with the game poised at 1-1 when they were hit by a sucker-punch goal two minutes from time. The 2-1 reverse was only their third loss in the league all season.

Takura Mtandari (pictured right) levelled it up in the second half but chances came and went before the home side struck late.

Nevertheless, coach Alex Inglethorpe was impressed by a young team that included three Under-16 players in the starting line-up - Andros Townsend, John Obika and Adam Smith.

Alex reported: "In the first half it looked like we were a bit physically intimidated and although we tried to keep playing and passing, we found it hard to match them physically.

"We went a goal down just before half-time to a free-kick but played really well in the second half, coped far better with the physical side of it and created lots of chances.

"We deserved our equaliser through Takura Mtandari following good work from Andros Townsend down the left, Takura reacted well and finished with his left foot.

"We created other chances after that but unfortunately with a couple of minutes left a speculative shot deceived Richard Stroud and ended up in the back of the net.

"The players can take a great deal of credit from the game, it was a great experience for someone like Adam Smith on his debut and he will benefit from it.

"I thought David Hutton was outstanding. He played for the reserves against West Ham last week and played very well on Saturday, he's a player who is getting better and better. Some credit should also go to the three Under-16s, who all played well."

Spurs U18s: Stroud, Adam Smith, Hughton, Livermore, Martin, Archibald-Henville, Townsend, Hutchins, Fraser-Allen (Mtandari, 60), Hutton, Obika. Unused subs: Cox, Dalton, Asajile.
