XXI International Youth Tournament, Spain
Group Stage (matches 35mins each way)
Real Sociedad 1, Spurs 0
Coach Pat Holland admitted his Under-18s struggled against Real Sociedad's system as we opened the XXI International Youth Tournament in Spain with a narrow defeat on Thursday afternoon.
The hosts fielded a 4-5-1 system in this first group game of the tournament and grabbed a win with a goal four minutes into the second half.
"In the first half Real Sociedad basically sat back, let us have the ball and tried to catch us on the counter," reported Pat.
"They lined-up with five in midfield in a 4-5-1 system and it made it difficult for us. We ended up having a lot of possession but no real chances.
"It was 0-0 at half-time and I was thinking about changing the system slightly to have a go when they scored about four minutes into the second half. It was a decent goal, a good control and finish after he spun away from Charlie Lee and Kieran McKenna couldn't quite get there in time.
"Although their system was difficult we didn't really pass the ball well enough on the day although we played four schoolboys and it was invaluable experience for them."
The lads' next game is against Osasuna on Saturday.
