Benoit Assou-Ekotto said our return to UEFA Cup action next season wasn’t crucial in his decision to join Spurs - he wanted to come here anyway.
Benoit, 22, played in the competition last season after winning the Inter Toto Cup with Lens. "To be able to maintain my experience in European football was very important, but it wasn’t crucial that Tottenham were in the UEFA Cup," he said.
"I wanted to come to the Premiership, wanted to come to Spurs and for me, it’s just about playing football. That said, for Spurs to play in the UEFA Cup can lead to bigger things."
Seen as one of the best left-backs in Le Championnat, Benoit played in 34 of 38 league matches as Lens finished fourth last season.
So what were his first impressions? "I’ve visited White Hart Lane and it’s a fantastic stadium," he said.
"I’m looking forward to joining what I’m sure is an excellent atmosphere in a young squad.
"I know about Edgar Davids but have much more to learn about the rest of the squad and the league, so a lot will be new to me.
"It’s an exciting championship and England is a footballing country with lots of passion for the game.
"I can’t wait to get started and I will give it my all."
