We have received a number of emails regarding the last time Spurs topped the league and there appears to be a few different occasions being bandied about. Cue club historian Andy Porter.
"To clarify the current situation," said Andy.
"We last topped the league (Premiership/Football League) on 21.8.99 following a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday (after four games, a defeat plus three wins).
This lasted for 25 hours until Man Utd went top on winning 2-1 at Arsenal on the Sunday afternoon (Sky game- hence 25 hours!).
We last topped the old first division on 30.8.86 having defeated Man City 1-0 at home in our third game of the season (win, draw, win). Lost 0-2 at Southampton the following Tuesday and had dropped to eighth after a goal-less draw at Highbury the next Saturday.
The last sustained stay at top of league was for four weeks between December 22, 1984 and January 12, 1985.
