Internationals - delight for Bentancur, despair for Davinson
Less than 48 hours after joining us from Juventus, Rodrigo Bentancur scored a huge first goal for Uruguay against Venezuela in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday night.
Earning his 47th cap, the midfielder opened the scoring inside a minute, supporting an attack and firing home from the edge of the box, paving the way for a crucial 4-1 victory at the Estadio Centenario, Montevideo. He went on to play 74 minutes.
With Peru drawing against Ecuador and Davinson Sanchez's Colombia losing against Giovani Lo Celso's Argentina, it means Uruguay are up to fourth in South American qualifying for this year's World Cup finals - and their qualifying fate for Qatar is now in their hands. Indeed, victory against Peru in March will guarantee fourth place and an automatic place in the finals.
Unfortunately for Davinson, that's not the case for Colombia, who slipped down to seventh in the standings after last night's 1-0 loss against Argentina. They could still catch Peru in fifth - and, therefore, go into a play-off for Qatar - but they are four points behind with two matches remaining.
Davinson played the full 90 as Lautaro Martinez's strike on 29 minutes was enough for Argentina to beat Colombia at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Cordoba. That was his 47th cap. Gio, now on loan at Villareal, played 80 minutes, his 38th cap.
Argentina and Brazil are miles clear - 10 and 14 points respectively in second and first - and have already qualified for Qatar. Argentina are unbeaten in 29 matches in all competitions, including 15 in this qualifying campaign. Brazil also remain unbeaten with a 4-0 win against Paraguay, Emerson Royal was suspended after his red card against Ecuador on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Pape Matar Sarr's Senegal take on Burkino Faso in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon this evening.
