Winksy - from the lion's den back to the Three Lions

Thu 05 September 2019, 11:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Winks has spoken of his pride at being back in the England squad.

The midfielder, 23, has won three caps to date and last featured in the 3-0 win against USA at Wembley last November.

'Winksy' played 41 times for us last season but suffered a groin injury towards the end of the campaign. He returned in time for the Champions League Final on 1 June but wasn't called into the England squad for the UEFA Nations League finals later that month.

After an impressive start to 2019/20, Winksy is back in the fold with Harry Kane and Danny Rose as the Three Lions take on Bulgaria on Saturday (5pm) and Kosovo (Tuesday, 7.45pm) in Euro 2020 qualifiers.

It’s always an honour to be selected by England and it’s something I’m excited to go and do

"It’s great to be back in the England squad, it’s been a while," he said. "I had the injury last season so to be back in the squad is fantastic news, I’m delighted. It’s a nod to the fact that I’m doing well at Tottenham at the moment and now it’s about continuing that form and trying to improve.

"It’s always an honour to be selected by England and it’s something I’m excited to go and do."

Winksy was also pleased to take a positive result into the international break - albeit admitting to mixed feelings after leading 2-0 before Arsenal's comeback for a final 2-2 scoreline in another all-action north London affair at the Emirates on Sunday.

"You don't want to go into the international break on the back of a defeat, especially after a north London derby," he added. "It’s a game where we probably could have and should have come away with the three points, we didn’t, we got a point and it’s important we take the positives rather than the negatives."
