Harvey White: "Great experience, but we wanted to win"

Wed 04 September 2019, 14:56|Tottenham Hotspur

The near silence in the dressing room after the final whistle told the story. Yes, it was a great experience for our development squad to take on Ipswich Town in the Leasing.com Trophy on Tuesday evening, but in the words of midfielder Harvey White, the players wanted more.

In the end, Ipswich, top of League One, unbeaten, came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory in front of over 5,000 fans at Portman Road. Every one of their starting 11 had tasted first team action either in the league or Carabao Cup this season.

Our young team - remember, we field an Under-21 team in this competition - took the lead through Armando Shashoua on nine minutes and competed all the way to the 90th, when Enock Asante narrowly poked wide a chance to grab a draw.

We wanted to put some points on the board in this competition, but it wasn’t to be. We have to move on to the next game

“It is a great experience, playing against some first team players at Portman Road but ultimately, we came here to win,” said Harvey, who started at the base of midfield. “We wanted more.

“We went 1-0 up as well so it’s hard to take when you lose. I don’t think we kept the ball as we can in the first half. Then in the second half, the early goal was difficult, and we made some silly mistakes.

“We wanted to put some points on the board in this competition, but it wasn’t to be. We have to move on to the next game.”

Our next outing in the Leasing.com Trophy will be at our Carabao Cup opponents Colchester United on 8 October.

Wanting more is a theme for Harvey. Still only 17, he impressed in pre-season when he joined the first team on our tour to Asia and featured in four of our five matches against Juventus, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Inter.

“It’s been a great summer for me, and I have to keep pushing on,” he added. “I’m enjoying my football at the moment, but I want more and will keep pushing myself for more. Every game is important.”
