On a night that we won a European away game by a convincing 5-1 scoreline, it would seem unlikely – on paper at least – that our star performers would have been our goalkeeper and a substitute.

That was, however, the story of our UEFA Cup first round, first leg victory against Grasshoppers in Zurich on September 19, 1973.

When Martin Chivers put us ahead after just five minutes, getting his head on the end of a Cyril Knowles free-kick, it seemed we were in for a comfortable evening in Switzerland. However, the home side responded, peppering shot after shot at Pat Jennings’ goal.
