Flashback - with Ron Henry

England international left-back Ron Henry continues our ‘veterans’ question-and-answer session. Born in Shoreditch, he played for us between March, 1953, and May, 1969, and maintained a key role in our FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup wins that followed our epic FA Cup and title-winning season of 1960-61. These days Ron is not too well and we continue to wish him all the very best.

FB_HenryWhat was your pre-match meal?

Haddock and poached egg, a great favourite of mine even when I stopped playing.

What current player would you have liked to have played alongside?

I have to say that I doubt if too many of the current group would get into our ‘Double’ side, and I’m talking about the Premier League in general. We were that good.

What player of your era is worth £30m today?

I don’t think any player is worth that but John White would have gone close. Football lost a special player when he died.

Favourite away ground?

Portman Road. Ipswich were sponsored by a grass seed merchant so their pitch was always superb and our side needed a good surface.

Most memorable game?

The 1961 FA Cup Final against Leicester City when I was voted ‘Man of the Match.’
