Spurs Diary - September

Looking ahead and back on events on the same day in years gone by.


1906    Legendary Spurs defender and manager Arthur Rowe born in Tottenham.

1908    We play our first ever match in the Football League – and beat Wolves 3-0 at White Hart Lane. Staged on a Thursday evening, Vivian Woodward scores our first ever goal at this level.

1897    We open what would be a title-winning season in the Southern League with a 3-1 win at Millwall Athletic. John Kirwan scores twice.

1916    Just days after we play Chelsea in a London Combination game, White Hart Lane is requisitioned by the Ministry of Munitions for the duration of the First World War.


1920    Winger Les Medley (pictured, right) born in Edmonton. He would join us, initially as an amateur, in 1935 and go on to play for England.

1925    Our Reserves beat a touring Real Madrid side 4-0 in a friendly at the Lane.


Kenny McEvoy’s 20th birthday.

1899    Our first match at White Hart Lane – we beat Notts County 4-1 in a friendly.  David Copeland hits a hat-trick.  

1937    Les Allen born in Dagenham. He would become a key component of our Double success.


1882    It is a Tuesday and subscriptions to the newly-formed Hotspur FC are due. It is, in fact, the day that the Club is formed.

1896    Our first game in the Southern League. Harry Crump scores our first goal at this level in a 3-3 draw at Sheppey United.
