Goalless draws rarely hold such significance. But the point we gained at the Dell in April, 1978, was beyond value.
This was the last league game that we played outside the top flight as we returned to the First Division by the skin of our teeth – in third place behind Bolton and Saints with Brighton losing out on goal difference.
Our advantage in goals was 34 with Brighton on 25 so the nine we put past Bristol Rovers that season was certainly important!
The atmosphere at the Dell that day was terrible. Both sets of fans in the 28,846 crowd suffered but at least Saints had an extra point on the board so were not as threatened by Brighton as we were.
