Bill Nicholson loved the ‘F’ word. It was fitness before anything. The bedrock on which all else followed. He would drum into his players that they needed to be as sharp in the 90th minute as he expected them to be in the first.

Old fashioned runs across country or on heavily sanded beaches were standard as were full-scale practice games between the first team and reserves when, ironically, his lads had carte blanche to literally kick lumps out of each other.
