My Spurs Debut

The section where we invite Spurs fans to pinpoint their first ever visit to White Hart Lane and detail the players who captured their imagination in those early days. This month, Mike Stapleton from Broxbourne takes us back to the 1986-87 campaign when we drew a blank against Luton Town...

Looking back now, I suppose it’s obvious why I didn’t see any goals on my first ever trip to White Hart Lane.

It was a great season for us in front of goal as we fought our way up to third in the overall league standings and reached the FA Cup Final before losing to Coventry.

But the day I went to watch Spurs live for the first time – a home 0-0 draw against Luton Town in October, 1986 – the man who seemed to be getting all our goals wasn’t playing!

Clive Allen is famous for scoring 49 times throughout that season, but his absence through injury coming on a day when we couldn’t hit the target was no coincidence in my eyes.
