As part of a regular series, we take a look at the matches in which a substitute has made a real impact for us.

Harry Kane v Aston Villa (Away) – Premier League, November 2, 2014

Whether it was scoring braces in wins over London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea or netting on his England debut against Lithuania, the 2014-15 season was full of highlights for Harry Kane.

In the opening months of the campaign, the striker had managed eight goals in cup matches prior to our visit to Aston Villa in the Premier League on November 2, 2014. With fellow forwards Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado starting at Villa Park, though, Kane took his place on the bench for the game.

Goals had been harder to come by for Aston Villa as they prepared to host us for this fixture but the home team took the lead just 16 minutes in. Charles N’Zogbia supplied a low cross from our left-hand-side which Andreas Weimann converted. It was their first goal since September 13, 2014, ending a drought that had lasted some nine hours and seven minutes of playing time. Adebayor had a good chance just before the half-time whistle to send the teams in level, but Villa keeper Brad Guzan made a good save.
