Our players have always been front page news – as John Fennelly’s ongoing series on magazines from the past clearly illustrates. This month we go back to the Sixties when goalkeeper Bill Brown was – in his underwear!

So now we know the secret of Bill Brown’s success. It was the string vest!

The ‘health vest’ came in two styles and these adverts must have come from the Sixties when the Spurs and Scotland goalkeeper was in his prime and a celebrated member of our 1961 ‘Double’ side.

Born in Arbroath, he started out with Dundee and played for Scotland at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden while at Dens Park. He was joined in the national squad by another future Spur – 23-year-old Dave Mackay from Hearts.
