Our class of 1972-73 had beaten Huddersfield Town, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers en route to the League Cup Final – our second such showpiece in three seasons. Norwich City, who narrowly avoided relegation from the old Division One that campaign, took a welcome break from league commitments to provide our opposition at Wembley Stadium in March, 1973.

Martin Peters, who would go on to play for the Canaries between 1975 and 1980, had our best opportunity of a tense first-half. His goal-bound header was cleared off the Norwich line by their skipper Duncan Forbes in front of crowd of some 100,000 spectators. Kevin Keelan, in goal for the Norfolk club, made a good save from Alan Gilzean while Mike England shot just wide in the first 45 minutes. At the other end, Forbes had a decent opportunity to score for Norwich but missed.
