Dream Team With Ian Melford

Ian Melford, from Wycombe, has been supporting Spurs since season 1974-75 and he recalls wondering what he had let himself in for as we were almost relegated that term! But since then he has watched some wonderful Spurs players – and this is his all-time best XI.

“I am a great believer in partnerships throughout a side so when I pick my main man in each department I then look to back him up with the perfect support.”

GOALKEEPER PAT JENNINGS
Always the first name down on any team sheet. Well he just had to be. When I first started watching Spurs, Pat was such a colossus that you just expected him to do brilliant things. And he did.

RIGHT-BACK JOE KINNEAR
This is where my partnerships begin. For me, Joe and Cyril Knowles were an exceptional combination, mainly because of the way they balanced the back line. In defence or attack, they bubbled.

LEFT-BACK CYRIL KNOWLES
The original attacking full-back. So crisp on the overlap, so confident in his ability and so accurate in his crossing. He read the game well, possessed good pace and loved a tackle.
