England international Steve Hodge played a key role in David Pleat’s enterprising Spurs side of season 1986-87. But, like many Tottenham fans, he feels that what was evolving into a great outfit was allowed to break up before it really achieved its full potential.
We finished third in the table at the end of that campaign, having put in a sustained bid for the title itself. We also reached the FA Cup Final and the semis of the League Cup.
But with Terry Venables replacing Pleat early the following season, we slipped to 13th in the league. We went out of the League Cup in the third round and then lost at Port Vale in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The contrast was intense.
Hodge arrived at the Lane just in time for Christmas and scored on his debut at home to West Ham on Boxing Day. Yet he too was gone by August, 1988!
