Flashback - with Richard Cooke

Looking back on his playing days this month is former winger Richard Cooke, who graduated through our youth system and made his first team breakthrough during our UEFA Cup-winning campaign in 1983-84. He scored twice in 17 appearances in all competitions before going on to play for AFC Bournemouth and Luton Town.

Flash_CookeWhat was your pre-match meal?

We used to have Dover sole back in those days. It started to get a bit posh around the Club at that time and that was reflected in the pre-match food!

What current player would you have liked to have played alongside?
I think I’d like to have played with Christian Eriksen. His ability on the ball is fantastic and he brings a lot to the team. His goalscoring is also a big plus.

What player of your era is worth £30m today?
Glenn Hoddle. In fact I would say that Glenn would be worth £60m in today’s footballing world. A very talented player.

Favourite away ground?
Barcelona’s Nou Camp. I played in a pre-season tournament there involving Spurs, PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan. It was soon after Mark Hughes had signed for Barcelona, and obviously Steve Archibald would have been there as well, having left Spurs to go to Barca.

Most memorable game?
Playing in the UEFA Cup match at home to Bayern Munich was special, but I’ll go for my debut when I scored against Luton in the old First Division. It was in November, 1983, and we won 4-2 that day.
