Birthday Boy with Oyvind Leonhardsen

Any suggestion that midfielder Oyvind Leonhardsen was prone to a bout of the so-called ‘Second Season Syndrome’ would be an unfair misdiagnosis of the hard-working Norwegian’s predicament.


Again he enjoyed a successful first term but a series of injuries bedevilled his tenure in the two seasons that followed.

Born on August 17, 1970, in Kristiansund, Norway, ‘Leo’ already had ample experience of English football by the time he arrived in N17.

Having made his senior debut as a 19-year-old for Norwegian top flight side Molde and gone on to represent Rosenborg, he first came to England in 1994 to join Wimbledon at a time when the Dons were riding the crest of a wave in the Premier League.

The midfielder hit the ground running – literally – and his lively movement and precision passing as part of a hard-to-beat Wimbledon side earned him a move to Liverpool in 1997. We added him to our evolving midfield in the summer of 1999 – with Leo arriving around the same time as ex-Wimbledon team mate Chris Perry.
