Birthday Boy with Fredi Kanoute

Fredi Kanoute celebrates his 36th birthday on 2 September...

It’s common in football that the bigger of any two strikers tends to be the target man. But when Frederic Kanoute played for Spurs he seemed to go against the trend and grew more accustomed to a playmaker’s role in the front line.

A tall striker at 6’4”, his turn of pace would often catch opposing defenders by surprise and, when he wasn’t going for goal himself, he was drifting into wider positions and looking to bring others into play.

Born on September 2, 1977, in Sainte Foy-les-Lyon, France, Kanoute started out at Lyon before joining West Ham United in 2000. He remained there until the end of the 2002-03 season when the Hammers were relegated, at which point we swooped for his services.

He made his debut as a second half substitute when we hosted Leeds United in the second match of the 2003-04 campaign and swiftly introduced himself to the fans with an amazing bicycle kick which won us the game.
