My Spurs Debut

The section where we invite Spurs fans to pinpoint their first ever visit to White Hart Lane and detail the players who captured their imagination in those early days. This month, Fred Graham from Chingford takes us back to the opening day of the 1980-81 season.

The first Tottenham game I attended in person was at the start of an average season in the league, but one that was made considerably more memorable by our efforts in other competitions.

We would win the FA Cup at the end of 1980-81, beating Manchester City in the final at the second time of asking – a game synonymous with Ricky Villa’s career because of ‘that’ goal.

But I was there for the start of the journey as Nottingham Forest played at White Hart Lane in Division One, with the Spurs boys getting off to a good start with a 2-0 win.

Villa played that day and so did Ossie Ardiles, but the Argentine contingent in the squad had a relatively quiet afternoon as I recall.
