Cover Story

Our players have always been front page news – as John Fennelly’s series on magazines from the past clearly illustrates.

We move closer to home this month with a look at the Spurs Supporters’ Club who produced their own excellent magazines during a lifetime that exceeded half a century.

Cover_main1These two front covers feature Spurs players who enjoyed winning League Championship medals, published as they were in October, 1950, and May, 1964.

The club itself was established in 1948 and originally operated from a kiosk outside the main gates to White Hart Lane on a match day, later meeting in the Hotspur Cafe or local pubs. Many fans of my generation will recall their base at Warmington House between 1963 and 1989.

Cover_ticketsThe SSC organised match travel and was at the forefront of European trips in the days when this was far from easy and quite expensive. They also hosted visiting fans at their headquarters, traded hats, scarves and rosettes, and even sold tickets.

They received an allocation of cup final tickets and I still recall my delight when I called in at Warmington House on a match day and was unexpectedly able to purchase a ticket for the 1971 League Cup Final (pictured, left). Good job I had 60p on me, which was rare at the time!
