Paul Gascoigne was England's most talented modern-day midfielder and simply one of the greatest to wear our colours.
He first made his name at Newcastle before a big-money move to Spurs. Superb club form led to him becoming a vital part of England's midfield at the 1990 World Cup in Italy where he really hit the heights. Lazio came in for him but after inspiring our run to the 1991 FA Cup Final - including that free-kick - he badly damaged knee ligaments. Once he had recovered, the move to Lazio was back on where he again became a firm favourite with the fans.
When he left Lazio he returned to the UK but this time to Rangers where he lit up the Scottish scene. A starring role for England as he led them to the semi-finals of Euro 96 then followed.
Later he played for Everton, Middlesbrough and Burnley before a spell in China. Won 57 England caps.
